Aaron Smith
Development manager, Hines International Inc
Strategy
In 2010 I was the RuGBC Board Member responsible for developing the organization’s educational services. In cooperation with the RuGBC General Director and other Board Members, RuGBC was able to conclude agreements with DGNB, the United States Green Building Council and BRE for the provision of authorized training programs in Russia for the DGNB, LEED and BREEAM standards, including supporting the certification of trainees in the Russian Federation. In 2011, as a Board Member I would look to improve the RuGBC training services in the following areas: i) expand the number of DGNB/LEED/BREEAM courses available to RuGBC members, ii) train local instructors so the courses can be offered at more reasonable prices and potentially in Russian language (subject to approval by owner of the intellectual property), iii) support the development of a local RuGBC certification program for local expertise to certify their knowledge of green technologies and procedures, iv) expand the training courses to provide knowledge in energy efficiency, v) and incorporate examples of local green standard implementations into the above training curriculum.
Benefits
RuGBC will hopefully benefit from my efforts by allowing the Council to provide a greater range of education services to its members. These services will allow members to improve their employees knowledge of green technologies and methodologies and allow them to obtain a certificate in recognition of this knowledge. RuGBC education services also help to cover other operating costs of RuGBC, allowing the Council to maintain a stable financial position and provide a high quality of service to its members. Additionally, I have a financial education and am well qualified to analyze and make suggestions to the Council’s financial management. In 2010 I wrote the annual business plan for the RuGBC submittal of its application to the World Green Building Council. Finally, as an employee of Hines I hope that my company will continue to be a leader in the area of sustainability — not just as a member of the Board but as an investor in the Russian real estate industry.

Julia Stefanishina
Senior Manager, Ernst&Young
Strategy
The strategy for education must include educational programs on sustainability for real estate experts as well as for high school students. Among other projects, my contribution would include lectures at a major Moscow university aimed at introducing new generation of experts to green building and to its financial and social benefits.
Benefits for RuGBC
Being a representative of an international organization, I have experience in developing green councils and industries in Western countries. As a Board member, I can use our knowledge of local market and international best practices to ensure effective development of a green building market in Russia, while at the same time avoiding some common mistakes other countries make. As the head of the green building department at Ernst & Young, I can ensure a holistic approach to the question of green development — my group includes experts in environmental health, climate change, corporate social responsibility, architecture, engineering, economics and market analysis. The group’s experts are registered with IRCA, have CCIM, BREEAM, LEED certificates and professional assessor certificates.
My participation in the Board will also help take into account opinions and requirements of the business community and attract new members. It is made possible by my 7 years of work on the real estate market, including close cooperation with Ernst&Young clients which are the majority of the leading market players. Over the last year I have participated in green building conferences, initiated a research into green building, organized a RuGBC business breakfast and obtained a BREEAM certificate. My current experience helps me use my new skills and knowledge to bring more efficiency to the Board.
